A Brief History of Slots

October 27, 2017

What do you picture when you hear the words slot machine? The stereotypical machine with three reels and a side mounted lever? Or something more modern with a multi-colored touch screen? Slot machines have evolved a lot over the years and have an interesting and colorful history in American culture, spanning well over 100 years.

In 1895, the first modern day slot machine was invented by Charles Fey in San Francisco. He created a simple automatic mechanism with three spinning reels. Each reel contained a total of five symbols: horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts, and liberty bell. The machine was known as the "Liberty Bell," borrowing its name from the bell symbol. Slot machines were also referred to as "one-armed bandits" because they were originally operated by one lever on the side of the machine, like the old-fashioned ones that you picture.

Liberty Bell’s jackpot was a whopping $0.50, making it an instant hit among saloon patrons throughout San Francisco. By 1908, "bell" machines were installed in most cigar stores, saloons, bowling alleys, brothels and barber shops. By the time San Francisco banned them in 1909, there were some 3,300 slot machines throughout the city. The design was quickly copied by Fey’s competitors, such as the Mills Novelty Company of Chicago, and soon slot machines were popping up everywhere, despite being illegal in some parts of the country.

They have several standout beers like Angora IPA and Blood Orange Blonde Ale. Although they don't have a kitchen, South Lake Brewing has partnered with local restaurants in town to offer food options in a food truck format. They have plenty of open floor seating indoors and a few outdoor tables with plenty of entertainment like bean bag toss, ping-pong table, and many more games.
