Water Skiing

One of my favorite ways to start the day is water skiing on our beautiful lake. The mornings are usually calm and serene with smooth water. Don’t be surprised to see the bright yellow and orange hot air balloon that is up most mornings. The balloon lands on a strange looking barge with big finger catchers protruding upwards.

Lake Tahoe is to be respected, the water is cool even in mid summer and the winds pick up most afternoons. Best to get out early and wear a wet suit. The south end of the lake is relatively obstacle free, although it is surprisingly shallow in some areas. Be especially careful of the Truckee River inlet near the Tahoe Keys.

Where will you find the glass? Pope Beach, the shores west of Camp Richardson along Kiva and Ski Beach, and off Edgewood Golf Course are pretty sure bets. Just north of Emerald Bay through Whiskey Cove and up toward Meeks Bay can also be flat. If the wind is blowing up a chop in one area try another.

Keep your eyes out for kayakers who also enjoy the tranquil beauty of the early mornings.

If you are launching your boat into Tahoe you are required to pass a boat inspection looking for invasive species. All private and public launches inspect boats. For details, visit this official website.

For those water ski enthusiasts here without your boat, I encourage you to get in touch with Lake Tahoe Water Ski School located at Camp Richardson on Highway 89. The school runs a fleet of Nautique boats, has a fun, cordial, talented staff, and will get you out on the water enjoying skiing or boarding. Whether you’ve never skied, or are an accomplished skier, you are sure to have a good time with Heather or Scott and their team. Lake Tahoe Water Ski School is located at 1900 Jameson Beach Rd, South Lake Tahoe, CA. Phone number is (530) 544-7747; call ahead to make a reservation for yourself or your group.  For more information visit www.laketahoewaterskiandwakeboardingschool.com

The photo is of my friend Scotty Bell cutting up the crystal blue waters just off the 18th hole at Edgewood Golf Course.
