There are several great places to ski on the south shore of lake tahoe.
Heavenly Mountain Resort
The closest ski resort is Heavenly Mountain Resort (SkiHeavenly.com), which is only a couple miles from us Heavenly has great skiing and snowboarding that covers 4,800 acres with 3,500 feet of vertical terrain. You can easily access terrain in both California and Nevada. The resort provides plenty of scenic views of both Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley.
Sierra-At-Tahoe
The second closest resort to us is Sierra-At-Tahoe (SierraAtTahoe.com). Just 21 miles away on Highway 50, Sierra-At-Tahoe has some very fine terrain with 2,212 of vertical feet.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort
43 miles from Lakeside but well worth the drive, Kirwood (kirkwood.com) boasts some of the biggest snow storm totals in all of Tahoe. You won't find any views of Lake Tahoe here, but there are still stunning views of its surrounding area. In the spring, the snow gets warm and wet in the afternoon and then freezes over night. To get the best snow conditions, it's a good idea to start on Heavenly's Nevada side and work your way over to the California side. This is because the sun hits the Nevada side first and softens up the hard snow. When the snow on the Nevada side starts to get too warm and mash potato like (around 10:30 or so depending on the day), you can keep moving west and play on the California side, which will just be getting hit by direct sunlight. If you time it right, you should be able to have snow that is in the spring sweet spot between icy and mushy.
